a typical han in the Grand Bazaar
(these use to be places where Merchants would bring their goods, and they were grouped according to what was being sold where, sometimes they had Mosques and or residences on the top floors)
while walking through a han
(Eric: "I don't know what he said... go ahead, after you.")
Good Decision- Standing ON TOP of the Buyuk Valide Han
(remember when a random old Turkish guy says something you don't understand in Turkish and then takes you through a sketchy door and up a sketchier flight of stairs... you should probably go. You never know what amazing things you might find)
an old weaving room on the uppermost floor of the han
(this was an old broken down loom. very erie)
an old room in the han
(here you see the chimney from the fireplace and a hole in the center of the dome to let light in)
Lunchtime
(this was a place we passed in the Grand Bazaar and returned to later for lunch. it was very good)
outside the Beyazit Mosque
(I particularly liked this side piazza. It was an awkward shape, but still functioned very well)
Beyazit Mosque
(the forecourt. I really liked he mixture of marbles here)
(I loved all these little spaces in the Mosques. It was like, here's this gigantic building, but within it we are still going to address human scale and create intimate spaces like this one)
(... a centralized carpet... are we in a church?)
(here you can see the way the front apse joins with the main central domed space using a half arch)
Grand Bazaar
(the vendors were so amusing... look at him smiling at the camera; I didn't even notice when I was taking this picture)
Bomba
(at the nagile bar... so good. we went to work on our sketchbooks, but just ended up smoking and drinking tea... oops)
